When I first began working with Scarborough Fair, part of the thrill of being an editor was looking at all of the collective artwork as telling a story. At the start of every year, we didn’t know what that story would be. We didn’t know who would contribute, or what part of themselves they would choose to show. It felt crazy to be witnessing such a collaboration of beautiful minds, to be watching pieces come together from so many different people—strangers to each other—that complimented, even as they sometimes contrasted, the work as a whole. As it all came together, I got to take part in the transformation that led a single artist or piece to be a part of a real, solidified unit.
As Editor-in-Chief, I had a vision of the lengths we could go to in order to make Scarborough Fair stand out as the beautiful, little gem I’ve always seen it as. My goal was to incorporate more artwork without sacrificing the written content, and play with the arrangement so that it all blended into one. I wanted to place seemingly arbitrary pieces side-by-side and leave the reader wondering why they work so well together. Most of all, I wanted the reader to open up our little book and be transported through space and time, away from school and, generally, our world to the world that the artists envisioned as they worked on their creations.
Yes, I had a vision, and in many ways, this is my story. But it is also the story of every single person who cared for and contributed to this journal. So turn the page, and be a part of the dozens of little stories that we decided to tell.
